India ranks a low 134th in the list of 187 countries. †¢ At the other extreme, India is home to over 126,700 super rich (assets over $ 1 million), and 2.5% of the rural household owns the 30% of land in the ‘Socialist Republic of India’. This clearly signifies the sustained high growth rate. However, failure in raising social and economic development reflects the myopic vision of policy makers who stress the importance of growth statistics over equity and use the phrase ‘inclusive growth’ merely for political interest. Post-liberalization India has followed the mixed economy model with capitalist inclination, and this invalidates a people-oriented development. The path of ‘inclusive growth’ that the Indian economy is supposedly following presents a cocktail of mystery, wonder and despair, one which leaves even the stalwarts bewildered. Mafia History Essay What is the Mafia? Some believe the word Mafia was the battle cry of an Italian rebellious group- this battle of cry was the following: Morte all Francia Italia anelia! (Microsoft Encarta 97). Despite both of these definitions the Mafia has evolved into a very complex and organized society of crime. Present time it doesnt represent Italian gangs, (even though thats what most people picture) it also includes Russian, Japanese and Chinese gangs just to mention a few. The purpose of this work is to describe some of the aspects of the Mafia. Throughout the course of this work I will use the Italian Mafia as my subject in order to exhibit my views more clearly.The history of the Mafia is sketchy but many believe that the Mafia was born in order to protect and help the less fortunate. The methods used to help and protect were, and still remain illegal. Today, the organization still continues to practice these acts or rituals. The difference between early Mafia and modern Mafia, is that during late 1800s to early 1900s, the Mafia used these illicit crimes to help their families and the noble good less fortunate, now they abuse their power and distribute the dirty money in abundance amongst themselves. (keep in mind that the Mafia was born in Sicily, in a time where authorities werent accessible).The Mafia also has a very organized family tree. This tree includes everything from bosses to soldiers. Soldiers usually belong in the bottom. Followed by these are called enforcers. They usually serve as bodyguards or bouncers who watch and protect their establishment. These enforcers are able to have their own gambling or other financial establishment. They are also able to hire others to carry out tasks. Above enforcers are commissioners. They control the area of the city and are more widespread. Next is The Boss. He controls one of the several organizations. Ultimately these are controlled by the godfather. Many times these Mafiosi have what is notoriously known as Murders Inc (Italian Mafia). This group of individuals specialize in murders. They consist of a small group of heartless individuals who kill whenever ordered to. In order for an individual to join the Mafia he would pledge the following: I (name given) want to enter this secret organization to protect my family and to protect my brothers. Morte alla Francia Italia Anelia!. With my blood (a knife is used to place a cut in the index finger or band) and the blood of all the saints and the soul of my children. Within this pledge there are many clues which reveal the lifestyle of a Mafioso.A person who belongs to the Mafia, or Mafioso is a very secretive person. This is because if any information is revealed which may harm another Mafioso, they be punished by death. The value of silence is a requirement of any Mafiosi, it is a norm of those who participate in criminal activities and those who violate it will be punished according to the grade of the offense. Depending on the offense he may have to prove himself to his boss, may be out on the street (the American Mafia) or if it was extremely important information, he would be killed. This information is kept within their own families (fellow gangsters) and is discussed amongst themselves despite the fact that there are several other families (chapters) within the same are or state. The reason for this is mainly concerned with financial situation.The murder, if done, may be completed using several methods. One method is by hiring someone, usually from another family, to kill the individual. This is the method most commonly used when the individual knows m ost of the Mafiosos in his family. Another way may be to be set up. In this case the individual may be set up by fellow gangsters he trusts. Many times these trusty individuals are required to kill their friend because of a big favor owed to the boss. The final way the individual may be murdered is purely by favor. This means that a member may kill the individual with the intentions of moving up in rank within his family. Violence is the primary use of the Mafia, but at times it is in the Mafias interest to use nonviolent means. For example, when dealing with small offenses, Mafia bosses may use debt as means of punishing the individual. This is accomplished through secrecy and cheating during gambling bets. Another way used to punishing individuals is by taking their right to take part in any profiting activity. Any enterprise, like gambling, or any way to receive money is either crippled or taken from the individual. Non-violent means are also put through violent means. For exampl e, if an individual borrows money and refuses to pay he will be punished but not killed. They will often scar the individual in order to warn others of what could happen if they refuse to pay. Th. final way of punishing an individual is by making him work for free until his debt is completely paid. On the other hand, violence is the tool which is most often put to use. Violence is not only used to punish, it is used to take over competitors enterprises. (The American Mafia) Some types of violence may include threats, destruction of property, or mugging. All of these are used to take over their competitors establishment. This is not done directly to the competitor (other than destruction of property) but rather indirectly, meaning through customers. For example, they will not threat or mug the owners of the establishment, instead they will do this to the customers. Other times warfare may be the violent tool used. This is almost always the case when we hear of territorial battles. Ma ny times individuals of these organizations take advantage of these battles and revenge upon previous, unrelated matters. This often leads to bigger death tolls. Todays Mafia in the is different from Sicilian Mafia in the beginning of the century. This European Mafia was built upon a sense of respect, loyalty, culture, family, and heritage (Sicilian heritage) They only chose people of Sicilian background and followed their beliefs very closely. This belief was that justice, honor, and vengeance are for a man to manage, not for the government. They were also loyal to the norm of the Mafia which was secrecy. Todays Mafia, on the other hand, include a large group of thieves, murderers, and a unloyal individuals. Despite the fact that it inherited some of the basic norms, these are often broken and abused. For instance, one norm no longer followed (in respect to Italian Mafia) is their selection of only Sicilian individuals. The main purpose of todays Mafia is to use any illegal means t o get money. These means include, gambling, murder, bootlegging, prostitution, and kidnapping. A major difference between this type of society and a normal society would be in the justice system. In our society we are able to sue anyone with reasonable cause. This may vary from money owed to an automobile accident. This isnt the case with the Mafia. How can a Mafioso take someone to court for not paying gambling fees or drug sales? This is where their own form of punishment, which we have discussed, come to play. This is also where they take advantage of their belief, justice, honor, and vengeance are for a man to take care ofThe society, which we call Mafia, has evolved very drastically. It has evolved and adapted to new ways much like a normal society, this being a society under government and police regulations. It is a very complex and organized group of individuals who follow old norms and take part in criminal activity in order to achieve one goal, money. I have described most of the aspects of this organization in terms of history, organization (ranks, etc.) norms, and goals. Land of Cokaygne free essay sample

The poem that I will study is entitled the Land Of Cokaygne and it belongs to the â€Å"Kildare poems†. The Kildare poems are a group of sixteen poems written in an Irish dialect of Middle English and dated to the mid-14th century. Together with a second, shorter set of poems in the so-called Loscombe Manuscript, they constitute the first and most important linguistic document of the early development of Irish English in the centuries after the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland. The poems have religious and satirical contents. They are preserved in a single manuscript in the British Library, where they are scattered between a number of Latin and Old French texts. The conventional modern designation Kildare poems refers both to the town of Kildare in Ireland, which has been proposed as their likely place of origin, and to the name of the author of at least one of the poems, who calls himself Michael (of) Kildare. In this first part, the poem opens on the description of the Land of Cockaygne, a land that seems to be better that Heaven as we see line 3 to 6 : â€Å"no place on earth compares to this – for sheer delightfulness and bliss – thought paradise is fair and bright- cockaygne is finer sight†. The author gives us all the assets of this wonderful land but we quickly realized that there are not a lot of differences between the Land of Cockaygne and Heaven: as in Eden and in Cockaygne there is no care for labor (line 18) there is no nightfall (line 26) – no quarrel (line 27– no death (28) and no dangerous or harmful animals (line 31). But he excludes â€Å"common† animals from the land as horses or cows, which is a bit paradoxical because they are not harmful. So we may relate those exclusions with the absence of labour : people in that land do not have to take care of it. By then, we see that the author invites us to believe that every unpleasant things simply do not exist in that world : as the muck because there is no animal , or bad weather and even blindness. However one element is often repeated in the description of the land which is the elements of food and alcohol and this latter does not exist in Heaven, which is one of its defect : â€Å"no alcoholic drink at all l. 12†. According to me we can associate these references to gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins which is also one of the folkloric feature of the Cockaygne imagery. So first we only have a â€Å"classic† presentation of a â€Å"perfect† Utopia, of an unrealistic place but when we keep reading, we notice that the description of the rivers which are rivers of oil, milk, honey and wine ( which by the way echoes Paradise’s rivers) introduces this notion of absurd and satire that we will find all along the text. Indeed at first we can think that this description is only a metaphor in order to praise, to speak highly of the Land of Cockaygne, a kind of continuity of the previous description. But when we reach the second part of the poem we understand that we should take this description seriously because there is in this land an abbey which is completely made of food : as we can see from line 51 to 62 =gt; the author here introduces a folkloric imagery which obviously makes us smile and we can help to imagine that building made of food. And once again, line 61-62, there is another invitation to gluttony: in this wonderful world we can eat everything we want and when you want as well. So here, the author clearly underlines that the monks are living in idealistic and surrealistic world and we may be question the credibility of the monks because at the end of the Middle Ages there was a sort of â€Å" anti-monastic† criticism. The monastery was seen at that time as a place secluded from the world in which monks could play and do their task. This satire may be directed against the Cistercian abbey. As I found on the website of Millet, the Cistercian were a reformed order who followed a stricter and more ascetic way of life than the ordinary black Benedictine monks In our text, the monastery fit with the tradition of Cockaygne ( line 54 to 66) and indeed George Ellis published in his novel In Specimens of Early English Poets ( 1790) a 13th century French poem called â€Å"the Land of Cockaign† where I quote the houses were made of barley sugar and cakes, the streets were paved with pastry, and the shops supplied goods for nothing. And it’s also a mixture of LOCUS AMOENUS of medieval romance, as I aid previously in the introduction. A definition of the LOCUS AMOENUS (that I found on the internet) : it’s a literary term which refers to an idealized place of safety or comfort. It is often a beautiful, shady lawn or open woodland with connotation of Eden. There are 3 recurrent patterns in a LOCUS AMOENUS : water; grass and trees and we find an accumulation of all of these elements in our text and it give us the impression that the author is exaggerating, that is a parody of the LOCUS AMOENUS Then, in a new episode, we are asked to believe that roasted geese and larks fly in the sky into the abbey and that they announced themselves with a kind of cry I QUOTE line 114 : â€Å" geese all hot, all hot†. It is obviously an absurd scene that invites us to picture the whole scene and there is even a kind of contrast we the previous passage with the birds which are sweetly singing. Obviously the author’s purpose is to amuse the reader, to distract him from the real life. Then, the poet finally tells us the lifestyle of the monks of the abbey. They are young (l. 121) and they are able to flight and no birds can compete them because they have â€Å" Fluttering sleeves and hoods† (l. 126). We know also that they do not obey their Abbot so in order to make them land, he has to beat a maiden’s rear as if he was, actually, giving them the hour in order that they start working again. Once they land, they start to â€Å"dance† around the girl giving her a pat on her rear as well. The poet records us the scene as if it was a common event, a kind of ritual that they do every day. In this episode is a mixture of both absurd and satire. Indeed the author gives us a completely different image, aspect of the monastery’s life, we have a caricature of the monks: they do not respect their vow of obedience and in the next part we will see that they did not respect their vow of chastely as well. In the last part of the poem, we are invited to see another â€Å"side† of the religion: it’s the description of a nunnery. As the monks, the nuns are young (l. 152) and during the hot days of summer they swim naked in one of the fourth river of the Land. As I read in T. D Hill’s explication: the sweet milk, the boating and the naked swimming are supposed to underline their innocence and even their chastity. But obviously the monks see them and they â€Å"instruct† the nuns. It’s a new aspect of the folkloristic Cokaygne which is the sexuality. The act of intercourse in the medieval text, is always â€Å"subtle†, is always paraphrased and here in terms of prayers and dancing. It’s a criticism and a satire of the clerical life, the vows of chastity is not respected. And eventually, the poem closes on another folkloric feature of Cockaygne: the one who will sleep the much will be rewarded and, I QUOTE : â€Å" and the monk who sleep the best – and gives himself a thorough rest- may if he cultivates the habit- hope to end up as Father Abbot. It’s a reference to sloth one of the deadly sins. It’s completely absurd because even now days we will never be rewarded is we do nothing, it will be great if it was true = the aim here is again to make us dream. Then, the end of the text gives us the key to enter into the Land of Cockaygne : we have for seven years, I QUOTE â€Å" wade through pigshit to his chin – the pleasure of Cockaygne to win†. We may interpret it by the fact that we have endured a harsh life in order to have the right to enjoy such bliss. We have to experience a penance to access the land but once again the penance is quite absurd, which is aligned with the tone of the entire poem. Moreover the end of the poem can be considered as a parody of a moral that we found at the end of tall tales To conclude we easily understand that of course this kind of text does not have a serious purpose. The aim of the poem is to allow the reader to enter into a world where all the restrictions of the society are defies, were sexual liberty is open and where food is plentiful. Moreover it is also a kind of text that mix all sort of genres in order to be accessible to everyone.

Franz now realized that what was there on notice board in Town Hall. These words of notice fell on Franz like a thunder clap. He couldn’t believe it would be his last lesson that day. He was badly repenting that why he didn’t learn, never paid attention to his lessons. He hardly knew how to read and write French. He was repenting that instead of studying he would go for other pleasant activities. His book that seemed always burden to him now to same appeared to him like old friends. Even his thoughts for his teacher M. Hamel changed thinking as realized that he would never see him again as it was his last day in the school. He forgot about his cranky nature and his cruel ruler. Now he could that the teacher had wore this dress in honor of his last lesson. He also understood why older people were presented in class as they were repenting why they never worry to go to school and they were there to show their respect to their teacher, who served them for forty years. When Franz’s name was called to recite the lesson, he made mistake and could even speak few words just opposite to his thinking teacher did not scold him rather he preached him that one should not waste his precious time just by live in impression that there is plenty of time and postponing the important things for next day. How would they feel when someone will make fun of them that they were not able to speak or write the French despite of being Frenchmen? Teacher did not put all blame on him but he also blamed the parents who never bothered to send their children to school to study instead they put their children to work on farms and in mill to earn extra money. Even he blamed himself that he often would send his pupils to water his plants instead of study at school and he would declare a holiday whenever he wanted to go to fishing. Teacher further said about the French language that it was the most beautiful, clearest and most logical language of the world. People should stick with their language it will be proven as the key to their prison in case they are enslaved. A magic had happened that day in class the students understood everything very well, because they were more attentive and teacher was more patient and polite on that day. Finally with very heavy heart, M Hamel stood up, he was very sad as he walked to the black board, took a chalk and wrote on it â€Å"Vive La France† which means â€Å"Long Live France† and declared the class was dismissed.

Types of Glass Tubing There are two main types of glass that are commonly found in glass tubing using in labs: flint glass and borosilicate glass. Flint glass gets its name from the flint nodules found in English chalk deposits that were a source of high purity silica, which was used to produce a potash lead glass. Originally, flint glass was a leaded glass, containing anywhere from 4–60% lead oxide. Modern flint glass tends to contain a much lower percentage of lead. This is the most common type of glass worked in labs because it softens at low temperatures, such as those produced by an alcohol lamp or burner flame. It is easy to manipulate and inexpensive. Borosilicate glass is a high-temperature glass made from a mixture of silica and boron oxide. Pyrex is a well-known example of borosilicate glass. This type of glass cant be worked with an alcohol flame; a gas flame or other hot flame is needed. Borosilicate glass costs more and typically isnt worth the extra effort for a home chemistry lab, but it is common in school and commercial labs because of its chemical inertness and resistance to thermal shock. Borosilicate glass has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion. Selecting Glass To Use There are other considerations besides the chemical composition of the glass tubing. You can buy tubing in various length, wall thickness, inside diameter and outside diameter. Usually, the outside diameter is the critical factor because it determines whether or not the glass tubing will fit in a stopper or other connector for your setup. The most common outside diameter (OD) is 5 mm, but its a good idea to check your stoppers before buying, cutting or bending glass.

By passing the Sex Purchase Act in 1999, the Swedish government took an unprecedented approach, decriminalizing prostitutes but prohibiting the purchase of sexual services (citation). Heart of Darkness vs Things Fall Apart Essay â€Å"Heart of Darkness† and â€Å"Things Fall Apart† show a variety of ways of depicting Africa in literature. In â€Å"Heart of Darkness†, Joseph Conrad shows the continent of Africa through the stereotypical perspective of the European sailors, who had a tendency to depict the natives of the land as savages, and in response to that matter, Chinua Achebe wrote â€Å"Things Fall Apart† through the non-stereotypical depicting perspective of the natives of the land to show Africans, not as savages or primitives, but as members of a traditional society. European prejudice is presented in a verifiable way in â€Å"Heart of Darkness†. The main character of â€Å"Heart of Darkness† or protagonist, Marlow, is a sailor who travels through Africa and describes the natives that he comes in contact with as savages. Marlow compares these different individuals to animals of some specific nature or just to the wilderness of the jungle, respectively. There was a point in this novel where Marlow’s vision came in contact with a pit in the ground. He noticed that it was a pit made for the natives to go and rest in peace or in other words die. Marlow describes those natives that were there stating, â€Å"Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees, leaning against the trunks, clinging to the earth in all attitudes of pain, abandonment, and despair they were nothing earthly now, nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation One of these creatures rose to his hands and knees and went off on all fours towards the river to drink† (Conrad 17). This descriptive portrayal shows the natives as â€Å"shadows† and nothing more than mere â€Å"black shapes† and not as individuals or men who are simply just dying. These men are no longer men, they have been stripped of all their characteristics which makes them human to dehumanizing characteristics where none can tell the difference of one dying man to another. None of the dying men are described by oneself, which makes it difficult for the reader to see where one man ends to where the individual begins. This creates an effect where these individuals look like eometric shapes and symbols of some sort. These depictions in which Marlow stated originates from a very stereotypical saying. The saying is that all Africans are made the same and one can not tell the difference between them even if much effort is applied. Similarly, there was an African man who was crawling to the river in order to quench his thirst. The way he was crawling in general is very dehumanizing. To make the matter worse and more dramatic, he crawled on his hands and knees which is animal-like and very degrading. The man is described to be on all fours just to get a drink, but when looking towards the European side, there is no way in Heaven that they’d be described like that. None. On the other hand, the European people would drink from a tap or maybe boil water from a well of some sort in order to have a refreshing drink. The natives are compared to animals of the wild when Marlow begins describing one of the workers on the ship. Marlow states, â€Å"to look at him was as edifying as seeing a dog in a parody of breeches and a feather hat walking on his hind legs† (Conrad 36). This worker simply shows that the savages who are the Africans have a possibility of being tamed because, â€Å"He ought to have been clapping his hands and stamping his feet on the bank† (Conrad 37). One can see that this man has been stripped of being a human being. He is now an animal, a dog, maybe, who is being trained to do some type of trick. From Marlow’s point of view he is still an animal and none the less, this man is pretending to be a civilized being. Marlow doesn’t stop there though. He continues to downgrade this European man by describing him to be just like the natives on the land. All in all, this is stereotypical. Furthermore, Marlow keeps his ball rolling by depicting the African natives as â€Å"prehistoric† and â€Å"simple†. He states, â€Å"The prehistoric man was cursing us, praying to us, welcoming us who could tell? we glided past like phantoms, wondering and secretly appalled, as sane men would be before an enthusiastic outbreak in a mad house† (Conrad 35). In the mind of Marlow, the natives are so primitive that they are in an aspect denied of having a language. Marlow sits there and begins to wonder â€Å"who could tell? instead of making an effort to understand what the natives were saying out of their mouth. What can actually be inferred from this quote is that, the natives were probably jumping up and down like a bunch of kindergarten students at recess or something similar to that. One can’t really be sure, but in all Marlow didn’t even try to grasp what the native Africans were saying probably because he felt that they were savages, or maybe their intellectual mindset wasn’t as great and average to the Europeans, or the native Africans didn’t have anything reasonable to say. Joseph Conrad with respect and similarity to Marlow, may have chosen to not include a specific language probably because he was influenced by the European stereotypes of Africans. What can be inferred from this is that, the removal of a language suggests that the native Africans have nothing that is sophisticated enough to say that would be reasonable or important to add to the plot of the novel. In â€Å"Heart of Darkness†, the native Africans are very underdeveloped, just like a third world country would be, in order to have a control of language. Though, there are moments in which there is language which supports the native savage (Africans) at which this is the time a reader might even hear an African speak. Joseph Conrad uses a specific technique when he writes. He uses a limited exposure to the native Africans’ voices which tries to ignore anything that might bring stereotype about. In response to Joseph Conrad and the Europeans and their use of stereotypical depiction of Africans, Chinua Achebe, the author of â€Å"Things Fall apart† portrayed Africans in a humanizing and traditional society. The Igbo tribe goes against the European stereotype in â€Å"Things Fall Apart†. The main character or protagonist Okonkwo does not agree nor does he disagree with the European belief that is shown in the novel. He is described in the novel to be, â€Å"a man of action, a man of war† (Achebe 8). Okonkwo is a very honorable man in the Umofia village, even though he has a very displeasing streak which is of violent nature. With Okonkwo’s strength and inability to be feminine, he is afraid of anything that is of feminine nature. â€Å"His whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness. It was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father. Even as a little boy, he resented his fathers failure and weakness. And so Okonkwo was ruled by one passion to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved. One of those things was gentleness and another was idleness† (Achebe 10). What can be inferred from this quote is that, this is probably why Okonkwo was always in need of something that was filled with action but he still didn’t fashion â€Å"idleness†. With the combination of these two aspects, Okonkwo can not handle the outcome. Instead when violence is applied to this equation, Okonkwo is as good as can be. With this being said, this further supports the European stereotype as savage-like. When looking deeply into the details that â€Å"Things Fall Apart† display, one can notice the contrasting aspects between Umofia and Okonkwo. Okonkwo doesn’t have any respect for his wives. As an Igbo man, Okonkwo man-handles his wives and children without holding back. Noticing the tone at this point in the novel, one can see that it is very much common for Igbo men in general to beat the ripe bananas out of their wives and children, but at a certain time. Okonkwo man-handled his wife during Umofia’s Week of Peace. Beating your wives and children in order for them to have respect for you is one thing, but when one disobeys the traditional setting of the clans week of peace then drastic problems do arise. â€Å"Okonkwo was not the man to stop beating somebody half-way through, not even for fear of a goddess. He had already chosen the title of the book, after much thought: The Pacification of the Primitive Tribes of the Lower Niger† (Achebe 117). What can be inferred from the title of the book is that the District Commissioner is prejudiced about the native Africans. In â€Å"Heart of Darkness†, Africans are also described as â€Å"primitive†, which shows that the European’s stereotype is so vast that it is able to be used in two very separate and different works. All in all, in â€Å"Heart of Darkness† the Europeans notions was that all Africans are the same; they are primitive, savages, and inhuman. In contrast to that stereotype, â€Å"Things Fall Apart† showed a traditional society, where the members are not inhuman. Unsatisfactorily, Okonkwo who is the protagonist of â€Å"Things Fall Apart† was not an effective representation of a civilized individual of a traditional society. Their performance recently has generated support from Congress and the public for enhancing the role of females in the military. Their performance has led the world to realize that women are extremely useful in combat. Defense secretary Dick Chaney said "Women have made a major contribution to this [war] effort. In his statement he is only finding the bad of his people and stating it for the entire room to hear. He shows great disrespect for the Mexican heritage by saying all that is wrong with them. He shows their flaws, weaknesses, and imperfections. I believe your heritage makes up who you are and that is you, so you should never disrespect yourself by disrespecting your heritage. I believe thee way he sold-out was by disrespecting his heritage. the Mexican- American is still trying to decide weather he is going to live Mexican or American. When the Mexican-American says, â€Å"The only thing I don’t like is how come I always got to play the goddamn Mexican-American†(Page-384). You are unsure by this statement weather he is selling-out his Mexican or his American lifestyle. You know he wants to perfect because of his attitude toward playing the part of the Mexican-American. The Mexican American doesn’t know where he wants to go in life I guess this proves no matter how old you are or how much of an education you have you sell people out and walk all over them. Even if it is a person you know or need all that does not madder if you are a sell-out. You will hurt people to get what you want for yourself. The Mexican American is soon going to find he will never find perfection and he will be lost with no friends because of all the people he sold-out. The Mexican- American and his buddies need to set goal or all they will have to talk about is being sell-out with no friends.

Middle East case studies: Elixir Technology

1.  Ã‚  Entering the Middle East market through Malaysia is the best alternative at this time. Malaysia has a market not dissimilar with that of the Middle East. Entering Middle East via this option gives the Company an opportunity to partner with a company which has insights on working in a Muslim country. This way, Elixir is not starting with zero knowledge since this entry strategy is a duplication of what it did in Japan. 2.  Ã‚  Elixir develops and sells computer software which includes the stand-alone and the server-side versions of the Elixir Report. These two versions provide business an enterprise-class reporting solution. ER â€Å"was designed for high-performance operation, capable of handling large report generation† (O’Neil, 2004, p. 4). As such, Elixir Report is â€Å"able to accommodate multiple input data source types and provide reports in multiple output formats† (O’Neil, 2004, p. 4). Aside from these benefits, ER can support multilingual reporting and platform independence, and can support mobile devices. The core competencies of Elixir for its ER are: Speed in adopting changes in the environment and technologies into ER’s programs and applications. As a matter of Elixir claims that flexibility is built in into the Company’s spirit   (O’Neil, 2004, p. 8). Network with technology vendors. This relationship enables Elixir to rapidly fit its ER into a client’s information system which was sourced from a particular vendor or several vendors. Capacity and capability to localize the Elixir Report into specific customer requirements. This capacity and capability is a result of the unique design of ER which enables Elixir for â€Å"easy modification for accommodating local cultural needs† (O’Neil, 2004, p. 8). 3.  As the Company recognized the positive relationship between its understanding of it’s customers’ technology vendors and the efficiency of the sales process, Elixir made developing partnerships with other technology vendors the basis of its â€Å"marketing, sales and distribution strategy† ((O’Neil, 2004, p. 6). Another component of its marketing strategy is stressing that other technology companies translate their products instead of localizing them as what Elixir does (O’Neil, 2004, p. 8). Also, the Company provided for a free trial of the software which can be downloaded from the Company’s Web site (O’Neil, 2004, p. 9). By scaling the software into different versions and selling licensing agreements, Elixir is able to sell ER at a price 50 percent lower than its competitors. This scalability, however, is not a liability in terms of software performance. 4.  Ã‚  Elixir, as to its plan and strategy to expand outside Singapore, has been averagely successful. For example, in its entry into Japan, the Company’s initial marketing strategy – advertising in international magazines – generated low response from Japanese customers. However, this was remedied with the Company’s partnership with GrapeCity which enabled Elixir to bridge cultural gap and language barriers. This same strategy can be used in entering the Middle east market. 5.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Yes, based on the facts presented, it is financially beneficial for Lau Shih Hor to take Elixir into the Middle East. I suggest that Lau pursues a distribution partnership with a Malaysian-based company. This company has a better understanding of the Middle East market than Lau which will allow the Company to better localize ER which is one of the product’s competitive advantages.
